Scrimpy days out: Wheelock Farm

Wheelock Farm is located just outside Crewe and is an entertaining day out for ages. I'm speaking from experience here, I've been going to Wheelock farm since I was a little'un! What started off as a barn with a few animals is now a large petting farm complete with adventure playground and a maize maze!

Part of the fun of Wheelock farm is that it is free to get in, it always has been. All you have to do is buy a bag of animal feed at the very reasonable price of 50p and off to toddle for a great afternoon feeding the animals (or nanimals as a 5 year old me would say). In the past there was a small play ground for the little uns to enjoy but that was long since demolished and there is now a huge adventure playground that I wish I could play on! The only catch with this shiny new playground is that it's £2 per child, still not bad compared to other places.

Now, back to the important bit, feeding the animals, even Richard got involved!

They had sheep, goats, donkeys and horses that you could feed.

All the animals were very friendly, especially the goat that tried to eat my handbag!

In the barn where some beautiful baby cows and some not as cute pigs. The baby pigs that were there earlier this year had obviously erm...moved on to tastier pastures.
After feeding the animals there are plenty of places where you can wash your hands. There is a tea rooms there but I've never tried it, I'm more partial to saving some money, taking a picnic and enjoying it in the field where the car park is. I've heard good things about it though, a great place for parents to relax while the kids play.

The shop at Wheelock farm seems to be ever expanding, at one point it was just a small room selling the animal feed, some locally grown fruit and some killer ice cream (It's seriously good). Now it's huge! it's got food, fresh fruit and veg, a garden centre selling everything you could need to spruce up the garden, home and kitchen goodies and even gift section. Like I said the ice cream is the way to go, I used to be a mint choc chip girl but now it's all about the honeycomb!

Very rarely does this afternoon out cost me more than £5 for two people. A bag of feed each and an ice cream at the end. If you've got kids it'll cost you the extra £2 per child for the play area but it's still a cheap day out!

After all that we definitely deserved an ice cream
The farm doesn't have a great online presence but for directions click here it's seriously worth a visit no matter what your age!

Where's your favourite day out?

Keep it scrimpy,
Laura.
