When the International Association of Book-keepers got in touch and shared with me a list of the most unusual degrees out there I was keen to share them with you all. And while you, for some reason, still can't get a degree in Harry Potter studies, some of these degrees are pretty good!
It might surprise you to learn that some of the following courses are actually available to study at degree level, but even more so when you see that they actually promise high employment or further study rates after university and also just how enjoyable some of them look!
1. Digital and Social Media
o Offered at Leeds Trinity University
A degree in social media, aiming to develop an understanding of cultural, social, ethical and technological aspects of the industry as well as the significance and philosophical implications of social media. Perfect for those looking to seek a career in digital media, and a great extension on the learning for those who are already exceedingly familiar with Twitter and Facebook! With a promising 91% employment or further study rate after university, this course could lead to a very worthwhile degree!
2. Education Studies
o Offered at Durham University
How does a course module on Harry Potter and the Age of Illusion sound? With a lecture title discussing Hermione Granger as a feminist icon this would be many Potter fans idea of heaven! Needless to say a number of critical skills for the world of employment are developed, and with over 93% of leavers securing employment or further study in the first six months of graduating it shows that employers do value the skills obtained from studying for this degree.
3. Viticulture and Oenology
o Offered at Plumpton College
Enjoy wine? Then this is the course for you! Earn yourself a Bachelor of Science degree in Viticulture and Oenology and explore the science behind growing grapes and winemaking to guarantee yourself a career in wine production. With an in-depth understanding of how wine is made, you can delve into research about regional production followed up by producing your own. This degree can promise to make you popular with your friends!
4. Surf Science and Technology
o Offered at Cornwall College
A 2 year course is available looking into the history and development of surf, some practical modules are mandatory, where you will learn how to build a dynamic surf board and how to ‘catch the perfect wave’. Further research in the course goes into the psychology behind the success of a surfer, discovering the relationship to fitness and also work experience in a related surf company.
5. Outdoor Leadership
o Offered at University of Cumbria
The Bear Grylls of degrees; learn about technical, strategic and practical skills necessary for the outdoors. A number of modules are covered over the three years, ranging from learning how to tie knots, weather forecasting, navigation, as well as the specific physical activities involved in kayaking, mountain walking, sailing and mountain biking.
6. Stained Glass
o Offered at University of Edinburgh and Swansea Metropolitan
There is an opportunity to study the art of stain glass at both of these universities. A mixture of teaching the traditions of hand crafted glass but also making use of the latest creative technologies makes it a very current course. Drawing, designing and making skills will be developed as well as building on students’ knowledge of the history of glass.
7. Parapsychology

9. Decision Sciences

Don’t underestimate the value of this university course, where students are the complete opposite of undecided. Taken to a higher level, students learn a range of quantitative methods in order to make business decision at the highest corporate levels. Graduates develop skills in research, data and analysis, problem solving from finance to information technology.
10. Bowling Industry Management
o Offered at Vincennes University
One of the most unusual without a doubt has to be bowling industry management, where students will learn about lane and pinsetter maintenance, shop operations and responsible alcohol service. With an onsite 18 lane bowling alley in place as a laboratory for work experience, students of this degree have an opportunity to gain first-hand practical experience over the course of their studies.

IAB offers a host of accredited bookkeeping and business qualifications in computerised and manual bookkeeping, and also helps to provide opportunities for young people and start-up businesses through a range of initiatives.
