SENRGy Love

Warning, this is a long one!

Last week was a very stressful one for all, we've all been working hard getting the last few bits of work done for the year and third years are getting dissertations done, now it's just exams to tackle! I took a couple of evenings out this week to attend two awards ceremonies, firstly, Tuesday night was a Peer Guide awards ceremony and Wednesday was Course Representative and Student Lead Teaching Awards. Come Thursday I was so proud to be a member of the School of Environment Natural Resources and Geography (SENRGy). We kick ass!

The Peer Guide Awards was to celebrate all the hard work that peer guides across the university put in not only in welcome week but throughout the year, we are already working hard on freshers week 2014. It was also a chance for us to say thank you to those that won't be here next year, either because they are graduating or because they are taking a year out.A special mention goes to our lead peer guides from last year Tom and Chloe, two of them took on the role that would normally be taken on by three people, quite frankly they were amazing, we couldn't have had such a successful welcome week without them. For 2014 the baton has been handed to Richard, Chris and Jane, I know they are an awesome team and will be amazing lead peer guides!

Just a small section of the SENRGY Team. I'll be genuinely sad when some of them don't return next year.

On Wednesday night I had the opportunity to go along to this years Course Representative and Student Lead Teaching Awards as I had nominated a few members of staff who had been short-listed for awards. We were treated to a three course meal and our head of school also treated us to a bottle of wine! It was an extra special evening for SENRGy as we were punching well above our weight in terms of numbers of nominations. Everyone made a real effort and got dressed up, everyone looked fabulous! As usual we were at the back of the room but took up two tables and sure as hell made ourselves heard!

While sadly none of our hard working course reps won their awards they have still done us proud this year, well done to everyone!
SENRGy as usual making ourselves seen on the front row there!

When it came to the staff the list of nominations seemed endless!

Ms Sian Pierce – Award for outstanding Pastoral Support

Dr Lynda Yorke – Fantastic Feedback, Innovation, & Teacher of the Year

Dr Karen Parkhill – New Teacher of the Year

Helen Gittins/James Walmsley & Nicola Owen – Sustainable Thinking Award

Quite honestly they all deserved to win, however I don't think giving all the awards to one school is acceptable so we let some other schools win.

A well deserved standing ovation from SENRGy
To kick off the awards Sian won her award for pastoral support, an award she truly deserves, we affectionately call her Aunty Sian or our Bangor Mum because so really does care about each and every student that walks through her door. I remember one day when we were Kyaking on the menai straits for our Geography Outdoors module, I wasn't having the best of times on the choppy waters and quite frankly I was a little terrified, I turned to Dan and said ' I wan't a cup of tea and a hug from Sian' . She's just that kind of person, she looks after everyone and she's fearsomely dedicated to her students. Not going to lie I was a little emotional as she was collecting her award.

Lovely and honest words from Sian's nomination

Next up, Dr Lynda Yorke. Firstly I don't think anyone else was nominated for quite so many awards which is an achievement in itself ,as was walking to the stage and back four times to collect various certificates, and with a dress like that I'm pretty sure everyone remembered her.Again, it would have been rude to win all three, although she deserves all three! Lynda won the innovation award for her work to bring real life experiences into the lecture theatre such as an academic style conference in her Year 2 Geohazards module and her use of twitter to communicate with students, something I personally feel more lectures should do. She was also nominate because her passion and enthusiasm for her subject shines through in everything she does

Another proud win for SENRGy

Next up is Dr Karen Parkhill, SENRGy's newest recruit, she got away lightly this year and only had me in a couple of her lectures but unfortunately she's been landed with me to supervise for my dissertation next year. Poor woman. Anyway, that aside, she was nominated for new teacher of the year, unfortunately she lost out but she's still our winner! I'm really glad Karen joined the SENRGy team, she's really easy to talk to and the other day she gave me a tesco pastry. She's a keeper. It's as much a credit to the department that Karen has been nominated for this, SENGRy is such a friendly and welcoming place to be. I'm really excited to be working with Karen next year.

That's it for the Geography team, although SENRGy didn't give up there, we still had one more award to go, all members of staff are concious of the environment in SENRGy,however some are so concious they get awards!
Well done to Helen Gittins,James Walmsley & Nicola Owen

It was an amazing week to be a member of the SENRGy team, it was just what I needed to recapture that spark that I had lost a little before Easter. Everyone was proud to be in SENRGy after these events, I think these tweets really sum it up.

So unbelievably proud to be apart of SENRGy right now. No one deserved those awards more.

3 awards for SENRGY, smashed it. Congrats , very well deserved
So very proud of Sian Pierce & for winning their awards tonight. So very well deserved!

 Thank you to everyone involved.

Keep it scrimpy,
Laura.
