2012

So this is my last post of 2012, I'm currently sat on a train on my way to Blithe Bridge to see one of my oldest friends for the new year.
This post isn't going to contain anything that will save you money or time, Just me saying thank you.
I started my little blog earlier this year because people really do have the wrong idea about students. We aren't all skint all the time, we don't all live off pizza and takeaways, sure some students do but for the majority students aren't too bad.
I was bought up to appreciate what I had and make the most of it and since becoming a student I have really had to put some of those lessons into practice and I wanted share those lessons with you so maybe some of you wont make the mistakes I have made (or have seen).
Looking to 2013 I really want to make this blog work. I want to make my scrimpy tips a regular feature and share with you some affordable meal ideas, I might drop vblogging for a bit and finally I want to really immerse myself in the blogging world.

Thankyou to everyone for your help and support this past year.
Happy New Year.

SALES! ASDA and Matalan

Sales are the perfect time for students to refresh the wardrobe. Today I had a quick look around the sales in George and Matalan. Both have produced some amazing bargains.

George ASDA

For my Non-British readers, ASDA is a supermarket here in the UK that has a clothes range called George. They supply affordable high quality clothing and it's always convenient to so some clothes shopping after the food shop.

Black vest shirt. This is quite long, covers the bum, I'm going be wearing it with my disco pants style leggings.
WAS £14
NOW £7

I don't even know how to describe this. But it looks AMAZING on, it's a top with kinda bat wing sleeves, I shall post a photo on Instagram when I wear it. George now stock some ranges from designers, this one is Barbara Hulanicki
WAS £16
NOW £8

I got two of these, this burgundy one and a black one. I quite like these 'see through' tops at the moment, the duck tail back just covers the bum.
WAS £12
NOW £6

Now this... I LOVE this! I have had my eye on this baby since our new ASDA opened in Bangor. So when I saw it in the sales on thursday I was heartbroken that they didn't have my size, we went back today and they only had size 8 or 16. I asked a member of staff just in case they had a size 12 hiding in the back. Then a lovely woman recommended I try on the 16 anyway because George sizes can be a bit funny, so I slipped on the 16 and BOOM it fitted. I am now they very very proud owner of this...

WAS £12
NOW £6

They beauty of hitting the sales in supermarkets is that it isn't all about the clothes, I also picked up these...

This was suppose to be £10 (I think) but I snapped it up for just £2.50!
80 different eye shadows for just £2.50! That's just 3p per eye shadow!

I picked up these for my Nan's Birthday at Easter, they were £5 and were down £2.50

Matalan

Now I only picked up one thing from Matalan although GET YOURSELVES DOWN THERE! I was totally shocked at the till when I was allowed to use my student discount on sales items! 50% off PLUS another 10%? Yes please!

Checkered Shirt. I have been looking for one of these beauties for a while and at only £6 (without discount) I couldn't resist.

I really love shopping in matalan and unlike some other budget shops I find their clothes really do last. Matalan really does make fashion sense!

Have you nabbed any January sales bargains?

Last minute Christmas gift idea

Okay, so you have been very unorganized and haven't finished your Christmas shopping yet and now you're panicking. Well calm down, here is a really cheap and easy gift idea that can be tailored for almost anyone!

Disney quotes

These word hearts or whatever shapes you fancy look really classy in a simple frame.
All you have to do is choose your words, in the one above I have used friendship quotes. Start by typing all of your phrases into a word document.

Here is a Harry Potter themed one I did. Make sure you have none of these annoying red lines anywhere, change fonts/colours then print-screen your work and using whatever software you use paste and save so you have a picture document.

Then using Word again use auto-shapes to insert the shape of your choice. The format the shape and fill it with the picture of your choice. You are then left with you message or quotes in the shape of your choice.

Harry potter quotes
Frames can be picked up really cheaply from Poundland or charity shops. Then print out your creation and frame it.

Here are some examples of words/quotes I used.

Harry Potter Theme.
 Disney Quotes.

Friendship quotes from Winnie the Pooh

Christmas Jobs

So it's December and for most students this marks the time of the year when the student loan is running dangerously low or even worse has totally gone. Although, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining.

Christmas is the great time to grab yourself some extra money.

Part time work is great for student and at Christmas time everywhere seems to be employing temporary staff, so back in November when I was home I trotted off to my local pub and asked for a job, to my surprise they said 'When can you start' .

So tonight, I'm off to start my new job.

For those people who have a job already before uni before you go, ask if you would be welcome back at Christmas. Most bars and restaurants usually welcome back staff as this saves training someone new.

My best advice would be to go in and ask around in about November but if you can't got home send out some CVs and get your parents to hand them out.

Money Saving Tip #2 Clothes Horse

Clothes Horse, Clothes Airer whatever you want to call it.
Get one. They save you a fortune.

The one I have is from Argos it costs only £9.99
Here at Bangor it costs £1.70 to dry your clothes but in many unis it is more.
It can easily hold a large load of washing, although hag towels on doors as they dry quicker that way.
This thing would have paid for itself in 6 washes.
It folds nicely away, mine lives under my desk.
Now off you trot and buy one! (See what I did there)

Shall you be getting one for uni? Or any other scrimpy tips? Share them here!

Budget Beauty

I got some total bargains last week, I picked up these beauties. Those of you following me on twitter or
Instagram (@scrimpystudent for both)  you caught a sneak preview of one of these products today.

poundland make up
poundland lip stain

For what seems like forever I have been hunting for some bright red lipstick that had all day staying power. At last I have found it. In poundland. Now, I'm always on the lookout for make up in poundland , I have had many Rimmel London Nail polishes from the place. So when I saw the two Nivea Extreme Resist lip colours and gloss, I couldn't resist. I grabbed a number 10 Scarlet-Red and 22 Pretty Berry. The other one I picked up was a Rimmel London Moisture renew lip gloss in 105 Pink Benefit.

First for the Nivea lippy's. Now, they aren't quite a lip stick, nor are they a gloss, they live somewhere in between. You apply the colour first let it dry for a few mins then whack on the gloss. The tube says it lasts for up-to 10 hours, I was dubious but boy does this stuff know how to stick to your face! Today I went shopping in Manchester  applied it at 8am, got back to Bangor at roughly 10.30pm and although it had faded a lot, it was still hanging in there!

Check out the before and after shots! (Wearing the Scarlet-Red)

Freshly applied

It didn't last well!
The first test of the day came, on the coach to Manchester  all I did was take my snood off, but usually I get bits of fluff sticking to my face, glad to say, no fluffy lips, no red rim on my drinks bottle. However in Starbucks, it did have a mild stumble. Although to be fair I didn't have to touch it up after this, there was still enough colour left on the lips. I really didn't think it could last 10 hours, 5 or 6 maybe if I didn't eat, drink, touch my face or smooch anything, I was so wrong.

lipstick on mug

Now as much as I do really love this and it will be making a regular appearance in my life, I do have a few faults to pick. As much as this stuff clings to your lips, it also clings to your skin. Good luck getting it off if you slip while putting the colour coat on. Also, it's a bitch to get off unless you have something hot/warm and oily (Won Ton soup). The gloss effect doesn't last as long as the colour, two hours tops. Finally after over 12 hours it left my lips feeling tired, dry and in need of some TLC.

The other product I purchased was the Rimmel London Moisture renew lip gloss in 105 Pink Benefit. I have owned the same product but in 585 Cherry Boost for a while now and they really do look after your lips. They contain SPF 15 do add some protection from the sun (not that we have sun in Bangor). They aren't amazingly long lasting but they do the job. The colours are nice and really do boost moisture levels in those lips. I tend to use these for every day wear and save the Nivea ones for special occasions.

All these for a pound each. Thanks PoundLand!

Scrimpy Secret Santa

Another Christmas post? Yup, I am spoiling you all!

A group of us had a Christmas meal last night at our local Weatherspoons. I ate so much I think I'm still full. The meal cost £12.25 for three courses and it was all delicious We also threw in Secret Santa, for those of you who haven't heard of it, everyone's name is written on a piece of paper and then each person picks someone at random. I got my friend Tim. So here is my super-scrimpy secret Santa present. The total price creeps in at just a smidgen over a fiver.

I like to call this my winter warmer set.

The ingredients
Spice Jars x3 - Poundstretcher - 75p each or 2 for £1
Large Mug- PoundLand- £1 (or you could use one you already have)
Hot chocolate powder- (I already had Cadburys in my cupboard)
Marsh-mellows- Poundland- £1
Baileys truffle bar- Iceland OR poundland- £1
Liquor Chocolate- PoundLand-£1
Hand warmer- PoundLand- £1
Baileys/Irish Cream- Lidil £3.99

Now I know this comes in over a Fiver BUT you don't use all the Baileys, only about 50p worth, nor do you use the whole bag of marsh-mellows.

Presentation-
Put the Baileys, hot chocolate, and marsh-mellows into the spice jars.
Put the Baileys and hot chocolate jars into the mug, the bar of baileys chocolate fitted beautifully into the mug as well..

Wrap the rest of the gifts separably and place into a gift bag.

If the recipient of the gift is under 18, leave out the Baileys and replace the liquor chocolates with non-alcoholic ones, maybe even some home-made cookies! You could also include some cream, however if you so, make sure they open it before the cream goes off!

Feel free to share any of your Scrimpy Secret Santa ideas

Chalkboard Mirror Tutorial

Happy 1st December everyone!

I'm sorry for my lack of posts recently, I have been snowed under with essays and work recently but I'm taking a quick break to show you this...

I know it says Happy Birthday on it but it would also make a great Christmas present. Even better it's really cheap and simple to do.

You need.

A mirror with a large chunky frame (I got these from a charity shop for 99p)
Blackboard paint (I started out with this from amazon)
Paint brushes
Chalk (99p for 50 pieces from the works)

Next...

Simply paint around the mirror with backboard paint, I found this needed two coats to cover.
Let it dry
Write nice things around the mirror (Try sharpening the chalk to make it easier to write with)
DONE!

So easy and it looks really good!

Have you made any Christmas presents? Feel free to share them!

Homemade Christmas decorations

Well I'm fully into the swing of Christmas, yesterday was spent putting a 9 hour playlist together on Spotify. Today I have started decorating my room with some home made decorations.

Usually I like to buy Christmas decorations in the January sales but I failed to bring any to uni with me  steal any from home. Either way I am not paying £1 for 2m of crappy tinsel, yes I'm looking at you Morrisons and Poundland! So this year I'm making my own, unless anyone would like to post me some decorations. Please?

Here is what I have so far.

Paper Chains

homemade christmas decorations

These are brilliant, they reminded me so much of my childhood . Simply loop long rectangles of paper together.

 Woven paper balls.

These were hard. This is how they are supposed to look, mine....not so much.
I wont be attempting this again. They look good online but for me, they take a little too much concentration

 Woven hearts.

The tutorial is here for a basket style one, I just followed the first few steps to make a more 2D wall hanging.
I'm going to do a few more of these in more christmassy colours.
(Please excuse the fact the glue is still wet).

 What I plan to make

Pom poms!
Like these here . Again I used to make these as a kid and I simply adore them.
Pine cones covered in glitter.
Remember making those as a kid? Glitter every where!
Christmassy Bunting
It seems to be all the rage in shops this year
Something that smells nice
I love the smell of Christmas, if I manage to make something that captures the 'smell of Christmas' I will let you know

Have you made any Christmas decorations? Feel free to share them below!

Money saving tip #1 Toothpaste.

So here we all are merrily brushing our teeth twice a day for two mins. You get through quite a lot of toothpaste doing that.

When you try to get to those illusive the last drags of paste are you a roller or a pusher? I'm a chopper!

It's really simple. Put the lid back on, cut of the bottom but keep the plastic as this is your new lid. Then wiggle your tooth brush in and scoop out some toothpaste. I didn't realize exactly how much toothpaste went to waste until I did this. I feel kind of sorry for all that toothpaste going to waste.

I'm thinking of doing these little tips as regular posts, what do you think?

Use by the best before date (food labels)

Food is by far one of the biggest drains on a student budget. So I find it really annoying when people waste food, just because it’s ‘out of date’ when most of the time there is nothing wrong with it.
There is a lot of confusion about all the dates on food packaging and I don’t blame you, it can be confusing at the best of times. So, here is my quick guide to all those dates you find on your tin of beans.

Use-by date.

use by date

This one is self explanatory, you should use it by that date. After that date BIN IT. Although personally if the 13th of December rolled round I would still eat it. Use your common sense
Foods that are labelled with this usually include ‘high risk’ foods such as milk, eggs , and fish

Best before

best before date

This label has very little to do with how safe the food is to eat. This is purely the date that the supermarket feel the product is at it’s best. Foods like these do not need to be thrown out after this date as they are longer lasting foods such as pasta or often frozen foods. They are still edible after this date. When eating foods past the best before date use that common sense again. Does it taste off? Has it mysteriously turned green? Yes? Then BIN! If not then go ahead, enjoy.

Sell-by (and Display-until)

Ignore this; this has nothing to do with you. This is for the supermarket staff. See the use-by and best before dates instead.

Vote!

I'm feeling totally inspired by the current US election but,  I don't feel enough young people are active in politics. I am really passionate about politics. I studied it at A-level where I studied both UK and US politics. Even before that I grew up watching the news every night so I always knew what was going on in the world. When I was in primary school political education didn't exist, moving to high school nothing was really mentioned until about year 10 in 'citizenship' when it was briefly touched upon. I think this is a really poor show. No wonder young people are apathetic about politics, nobody tells them about it! Lets be honest question time isn't the most attractive program to watch before bed.

Most university's have political groups (Labour , Conservative, Plaid Cymru, and LibDem here in Bangor). These usually take the form of societies, I would really recommend joining them even if you just go along to a few things in the year..I joined one (I'm not going to say which one) not because I vote for that party all the time, I just feel that my ideologies (general ideas and morals) fit more with that party.

Registering to vote is your chance to have your say. Don't know who to vote for? In the run up to an election the BBC tends to have really good briefing of each party's manifesto (what they plan to do). Take a look at these if you aren't sure. Please please please don't think that voting is a waste of time it really isn't. Young people need more of a voice and by simply turning out to vote on election day, you make a big difference.

So here is what I want you to do, while you have a free 10 mins at some point I want you all to do me a favor; pop over to http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk . It really doesn't take long to register to vote but you can really make a big difference.

As a student you can be registered in both your home constituency and your university constituency. You get two votes!

Homesickness.

Sorry for the lack of recent activity, I've been hit with Homesickness. Again. Most freshers, and even second and third years, will suffer at some point. There are several kinds of homesickness that I have observed.

The one that hits you like a train

This is what I suffer with. I was doing really well for the first few weeks. Then in week 4 it just hit me. Anything and everything would set me off, the smell of bread in Morrisons set me off once and I just stood there on the verge of a breakdown. Then when I got back to my room the photo of my dog set me off again. This kind of homesickness passes very quickly, I found I had a miserable night in, just moping around watching Bambi (boy was that a bad I idea).

The one that makes you seem like a hermit.

With this one people just get really miserable, don’t want to go out, don’t want to eat, or function in any way. If you suffer from this one then try and let at least one person know, flatmates really are understanding when it comes to homesickness, we have all been there.

The one where you just get drunk.

This one is bad. It costs you way too much to go out and drown your sorrows every night. Plus you feel awful the next morning. If you really must go out and get drunk every night, don’t go on your own, go out with a group and really try and involve yourself in the night out.

The one where you turn into your mother.

I also suffer from this and I am very sorry to all my flatmates who put up with this. My mother is a massive clean freak. This means that sometimes I just have to clean. I can spend hours cleaning. I don’t even know why. I hate cleaning. I also cook a lot when I'm homesick, trying to recreate those homely meals, I make massive portions so my housemates are all well fed for the week after.

Homesickness is totally normal, embrace it, tell your family you are missing them, chances are they are missing you. You need to find your own way of coping with homesickness, mine is to grab a sad film and some popcorn and have a good cry. Although if you are suffering really badly and it is affecting your ability to function normally then don’t suffer alone, most university’s have a phone number you can call just for a chat. Here at Bangor we have Nightline that is run by students for students. You just call them up and they listen.

Fresher’s flu!

Everyone gets fresher’s flu on some level, I haven't (or haven’t yet) had it full whack but I have had it in a very mild form. Basically you get fresher's flu because after freshers and the first few weeks of uni you are so busy all the time and there has been so much change, you will be mega tired and your immune system just can’t cope. To make it worse with so many other people around it spreads, so just as you get rid of one BOOM! It’s back. Any good fresher should turn up with a well stocked ‘drugs bag’ containing a few basics for freshers flu and beyond!

Plasters should be carried by all. They always come in handy, after one your housemates has sliced their finger open into tonight's tea or you have blisters after that big night out.

It's always good to keep those vitamin C levels up during freshers week so invest in some vitamin tablets. (even if the scientists say they don't work)

Throat sweets will be your savior during a really dull 2 hour lecture where your throat feels like it is ripping itself apart. Pop them in your bag and take them with you.

These little beauties are amazing, sometimes all you need is that warm drink before bed and now they don't taste like crap. Well they still do but the blackcurrant taste helps a little.

Flu tablet, get extra strength, you will need them. For me they were the only things that worked, if you can try to get caffeine free ones for at night or it can be really hard getting to sleep and it's hard enough sleeping in a bed that isn't yours.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen. The staple of any drugs bag. They can be used for anything.

Vaporub works miracles over night. My dad sent me this up in my first week. It really is good stuff. you don't have to get branded though, it's all the same.

If you are feeling really groggy try putting a bit in a bowl of hot water and inhaling the vapours, it should clear the sinus'

Germolene

This is good stuff, I'm not sure on the price I've had this tube forever, a little goes a very long way. It contains local anesthetic so whack it on a cut or blister for instant relief.

I would recommend stocking up on these BEFORE you come to uni. All boots does in September is whack their prices up so poor ill freshers have to pay more. Just buy a little bit every now and again or just do what I did and raid your parents stashes.
Thanks guys!

Keep it scrimpy,
Laura.

Education education education! (Finding the right course)

This is a follow up post from 'Home Sweet Home'

For some people going to uni isn’t about finding a place that is ‘home’ it’s about the course.

Applying for Uni starts way before you filling the dreaded UCAS form (seriously you will hate it by the end). Really it starts when you first start your A levels (or other form or further education after GCSE). This is the time you should be thinking about what course you want to do. Having a chat with your school/collage carer’s adviser is always a good idea. There are several things you should consider here:

  1. What you are good at

You need to get good grades in your chosen subject. It’s that simple, if I agree with that or not is a different matter.

  1. What you are passionate about

You are going to have to study your chosen subject for a minimum of three years, if you don’t enjoy it you wont be motivated to turn up to any lectures.

  1. What is realistic

This kind of encompasses the two above, but be realistic about your choices, if you want to do veterinary or medicine, have you got the relevant experience? Those are possibly the two most competitive courses out there, for both you have to take an admissions test (check the UCAS website for more info on this). Have you got what it takes to stand out from the crowd?

  1. What you want to do after Uni?

Make sure that you are taking the right course for what you want to do after uni. Doing a degree in Maths is not going to help if you want to go into wildlife conservation.

But what if I want to study more that one subject?

Studying a combination of subjects is very common. I have a friend over in Keele studying joint honours of Biology and Psychology. There are endless combinations of subjects you can study check it out UCAS.
There are two different ways you can study two subjects-
Joint- This is where you two chosen subjects are studied in equal weight. This option is great if you really cant decide between two subjects. At the end of it you come out with a joint honors degree so, Subject X and Subject Y.
Major/Minor- This is where one of your subjects is more weighted than the other. This option would be good if you preferred one subject over the other. At the ends of it you come out with a degree that says Subject X with Subject Y

Check UCAS for up to date details on which combinations are available where.

Feel free to comment with any questions you have and I will try to answer to all of them.

The grand tour!

So I thought I best give you all a tour of my beautiful room I call home. I like to show it off, I’m bloody paying enough for it!
Most of the rooms here in Bangor are en suite, the only ones that aren't are the ones not on the main accommodation campus , they are old and smell funny. So here I am in my en suite room, basic with bed desk and wardrobe and then in the shower room toilet, sink and small/tiny shower. As basic as it is I like to think I have made it feel like home

Bangor university Alaw hallsFirst up we have my sweet little bed. There is a big draw hidden under the bed where i keep 'spares' so towels pajamas , bras , and bedding and a few other things I couldn't find a home for. Behind my bed is a horrible curtain! I hate it with a passion but the uni wont let me change it so I suppose I will have to learn to love it. On my window you can just about see my duck collection. I collect rubber ducks... don't judge me. My washing basket resides at the bottom of my bed and I love how on this photo you can see my little alcohol stash.

Bangor University Alaw halls bedroom

My desk area is very rarely this tidy. Lecture notes very quickly swamp me. My two shelves are put to good use, one I set aside as a Harry Potter themed shelf the other has my books a DVDs on (I don't have a TV licence) My notice board should be probably be put to better use, right now it has a few assignments and post it notes on and all my receipts for when I sort my budget at the end of the week.
Bangor University halls en-suiteFinally my bathroom, well shower room. It's a good size and does it's job. The shower curtain isn't really long enough and you have to be very careful not to flood your room. Seriously, a girl a few floors above me flooded her whole room the other day. There is a huge mirror above the sink which is great. It's a really easy room to keep clean. With there being so little floor space I don't tend to mop up, I just use bathroom wipes and give the floor a quick wipe.
So that's my beautiful room. How did you make your room feel like home?

Keep it scrimpy,
Laura

Home sweet home.

Note this post is about finding a place that feels good. A post about find the right course for you is on its way.

When picking a university not only is it important to pick one where the course is right for you but it is arguably more important to pick a university that feels good. Remember you have to live there for at least three years. The only way to do this is to physically visit the place; there is no way of me telling you what is right and what is wrong on this one. You need to go, you need to decide.

Parents can be a tough one on this one (a whole post about parents to come along later). They do want what is best for you. My mum took me down to Plymouth Uni, she loved the place, so did I, but…It was just so far away, I couldn’t realistically see myself living there .But she didn’t quite get my view point and kept pushing me to Plymouth.  My Dad always stayed on the fence on this one and I really appreciated that, he just wanted me to go where I felt was going to be best.

There are several things I recommend for finding that special place.

University prospectus-Get ALL of the prospectus’, they are free, who can resist free things? (Number one lesson of being a student, if it’s free you take it). On a more serious note, do take time to look through them, your college or 6th form with usually have some copies. This should give you an idea of the kind of places you like or don’t.

Open days- The first one you go to you will get a basic idea of how you feel about the pace, take your parents along and focus on the university itself, course and accommodation. If you like the place, try and get to a second. However this time try and focus your attention on the city, the social aspect, check out some shops, try a few pubs. Ask yourself, could you picture yourself living here? Do you feel safe? Does it feel like home?

Casual visits- If your university is close enough try and pop down for a visit. Getting the train down (or up) can give you a good idea of the cost of coming home. These non organised visits will give you a chance to see the city on an average day, rather than a day where the uni is pointing out the best bits and pushing the crap under the rug. Again use this opportunity to test out shops, take some friends with you and get their opinion of the place.

Students- Remember you have to live there. It will be your home. Don’t let anyone else push you.

Parents- This is just as scary for you as it is for your child. Try not to stress them out too much. Let them find their own way. Try not to push to one place too much.

Hello!

Welcome to Scrimpy Student, my new baby blog. Here in this wonderful world of students I hope to share with you some hints and tips to save those oh so precious pennies and generally get you through your time at uni.
Firstly I had better introduce myself. I am Laura, a first year Geography BSc student at Bangor University.
(That's me over there!)

I am from the Staffordshire Cheshire boarder area. I love my dog to bits and miss her so so much now I'm here. I’m a missive Harry Potter fan.
I like saving money, I love shopping! I love good quality food. And the best bit? I can still have it all on my student budget. Stay tuned to find out how.

Keep it Scrimpy!

 Laura.
